Comanche Springs Astronomy Campus is located at the heart of Big Ranch Country in North West Texas. (Click here for maps.) This campus lies in a corridor of dark skies that stretches from outside the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex to Amarillo.

It takes three to four hours to reach Comanche Springs from the greater Metroplex area, two hours from Lubbock or Amarillo, and two and a half hours from Oklahoma City. The area is serviced by major highways which makes the campus easily accessible from all points on the compass.

As the name implies, our campus is located in an area that enjoys a rich history as a Comanche bison hunting grounds. A spring located just south of the campus dates back as far as recorded and spoken history in the area.

The 50 acre campus was donated to 3RF by the late Bettie B. Gafford from the McAdams ranch. Thanks to her passion for nature conservation, the campus enjoys rich biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Additional land acquisitions will be short-coming as the campus grows in significant size and resources.

Currently, 3RF has completed the construction of the Star Field, Roll-Off Observatory, the Sayre Observatory, and the Large Observatory and Classroom. These facilities are outfitted with cutting edge astronomy equipment that is used exclusively for public observing programs.
